Wall of Separation

"We want that thing down, and we want it down now!"

"And, um, what 'that thing' are you talking about, ... sir?"

"Never you mind, honey! You just get your boss down here, pronto!"

"Someth ... er, someo ... er, visitors!" buzzed the receptionist.

"Ah," smiled the Boss, breezing affably in. "And what can I do for you gentle ... um, good ... um ... How can I help you?"

"It's that separator thing you've got going there," barked the visitors' spokesm ... spokesp ... speaker. "It has to go! You can't keep us out! It isn't fair!"

"Ah, you must be talking about the Skin," replied the Boss. "It's purpose is to protect the body from viruses and bacteria."

"You just watch yer talkin' organ, there, Sonny Jim!" fumed the visitor. "We got as much right as you do to be on the inside!"

"Actually," smiled the Boss, "you don't. I and my associates are bodily organs and fluids. I, for example, am the Brain. Our function is to make the body ... function. Keep it healthy. Safe. Working. You, on the other hand, treat bodies as food."

"You can't exclude us!" cried the Virus. "It's unconstitutional!"

"Actually, letting you in would be unconstitutional," said the Brain. "Or anti-constitutional. Destructive to the Constitution, that is."

"Oh, no, you don't!" snapped the Virus. "Nowhere - I repeat, nowhere - does the Constitution say we can't come in!"

"Well, actually, it does," said the Brain. "It's designed to keep you out. That's what the skin is for. That's why we have white blood cells and antibodies. The Constitution is built to keep stuff like you out."

"Nonononono!" insisted the Virus. "Yer not gonna get away with that 'logic' stuff! Somewhere, it has to say, 'The Skin is for keeping Viruses and Bacteria out,' or it doesn't count. 'The Skin is to protect the Body' isn't good enough. 'No Viruses or Bacteria allowed in' isn't good enough. It has to be the exact words, see? Doesn't say that, does it? Huh? I'll give a thousand bucks to yer favorite charity if you can find those words in the Constitution!"
