Special to the Daily Dishrag - In the wake of the recent rash of middle and high school shootings, an ACLU task force has issued a report denouncing police harassment of students. Entitled "Going to School While White," the report alleges that police have been targeting white suburban male students between the ages of 10 and 18 for arbitrary searches and interrogation. According to the ACLU, "This phenomenon is similar to 'Driving While Black' stereotyping, whereby African Americans are routinely stopped and harassed solely because of their race. We find this profiling of white male students to be equally baseless and arbitrary." The ACLU report cites the following abuses by police:
- Arbitrary friskings.
Police accost students before school, between classes, and even during
class time. "Everybody picks on me, even the police," says one youngster,
who identified himself only as 'Cody.' "It's embarrassing.
It really motivates me to get even, if you know what I mean."
- Locker searches. Police
barge into student lockers, often breaking off the locks, and paw through
the contents. "We haven't found any guns yet," admitted one officer,
"but we've confiscated some nifty dirty magazines."
- Unwarranted surveillance.
Students complain of police officers driving by their houses at odd hours,
videotaping them on their way to school, even peeking in their windows
at night. "It's a blatant violation of my right to privacy," says
'Travis,' who collects antique firearms in his spare time. "But don't
worry. I'll teach them a lesson some day."
In a related development, the Daily Dishrag has learned that "Going to School While White" stereotyping has spread beyond the police forces. Taxi cab drivers in suburban white neighborhoods have grown leery of picking up young white male passengers, especially near schools.
"The Beamer was in the shop last week," complains 'Jason,'
"and I couldn't get a cab to take me home. I stood on the corner
for an hour, and not a single cab would stop. I saw one pull over
just a block past me to pick up an African-American kid. Hey, I know
that kid, and his parents are just as rich, shallow, and controlling as
mine! It makes me so mad, I just want to break into the gun cabinet
at home and waste a few of my classmates."
