The Mexican Wall came down
today. That's what they say, anyway. Now there's nothing to
prevent the unwashed hordes from teeming into the civilized world.
Criminals, drug dealers, rapists. And terrorists.
Maybe a few good people. There goes civilization as we know
it, and the authorities can't seem to do anything about it. I
guess it was inevitable. I guess the camps were inevitable.
I don't think anyone wanted the camps. But what can you do with
all those refugees? It's not like a country has an obligation to
take someone else's riffraff, but you just get stuck with them.
You have to put them somewhere. It was bad enough after the
first inundation, but the infrastructure seemed to be holding up pretty
well. But that was just New Orleans. When Miami went under,
that was too much. Mexico just couldn't handle the influx.
Heck, all of Central America is popping at the seams. Now
that the wall is down, all of South America will be at risk.
So I did the smart thing. I went north instead of south.
Canada had such a welcoming reputation. And the Canadian
camps weren't too bad until New York City was inundated. Now it's
shivering room only and optional sanitation. They keep moving us
further north. I think I'm somewhere in ... Saskatchewan?
But I hear talk of something called ... the Northwest
Territories? Women and children got separated out months ago.
Haven't seen my family since. I can only assume it was for
better accommodations, right? The guards won't tell you anything.
So much for smart. Have you seen the new prime minister they elected?
Racist, xenophobic, yank-baiter. How can people fall for
such hatefulness? He just closed the border, you know. I
know I'm lucky to have gotten in ahead of that. I just don't know
which kind of luck.
But still the refugees come, defying every effort to stanch the flow.
If you look south, you can see them coming, spreading like
an avenging inkblot.
FYI, we already have
internal refugees. The residents of Shishmaref, Sarichef Island,
near the Bering Strait, have voted to relocate to the mainland to avoid
inundation on their rapidly eroding island. No funding for this
is forthcoming, however, and none should be expected, as it flies in
the face of traditional refugee protocol. That is to wait until
the catastrophe is right on you and then run (or swim) for your lives.
This ensures the maximum expense, loss of life, dislocation, and
hardship.
