The Hyenas and the Jackals:  A Fable for Our Times

It came to pass one day that a pack of hyenas and a pack of jackals came upon the ruins of a slain antelope at the same time.  They wrestled over the carcass for hours, but neither side was able to gain an advantage.  Finally, tired of the fruitless back and forth tugging, they tried a different tack.  They began arguing over the prize.
"This antelope belongs to us," asserted the hyenas.  "We found it first!"
"Did not!  Did not!" snarled the jackals.  "We saw it first!"
The hyenas just laughed.  "It's in hyena territory," they claimed.
"Baloney!" spat the jackals.  "You're just trying to thwart the will of the lions.  They wanted us to have it."
"We're trying to thwart the will of the lions?" screeched the hyenas incredulously.  "The Constitution of the Jungle guarantees us a higher percentage of the kill, regardless of the will of the lions.  But they definitely intended for us to have the white meat, so you're the ones who are trying to thwart the will of the lions!"
"You know, if you had any dignity, you would just yield this carcass up to us," suggested the jackals.
"On the contrary," replied the hyenas.  "It's you who show no class by attempting to take our antelope.  Why don't you give it up?"
About that time, a pride of lions happened by.  Seeing the hyenas and jackals bickering over the remains of an antelope, they became curious.
"Hey, guys," inquired the lions, "what's going on?"
"They're trying to steal our antelope!" shouted the hyenas.  "In clear contempt of the will of the lions!"
"Your antelope, our Aunt Fanny!" retorted the jackals.  "This is our antelope!"
"You know, we can't stand the lot of you," said the head lion.  "It's just that nature requires scavengers to clean up our mess.  We hope you choke on it."
"I told you we should have let the vultures have it," scolded one young lion.
"No, no, no!" retorted the other lions.  "It has to be either the jackals or the hyenas.  The vultures will never be good for more than 5%."
At that point the hyenas and the jackals turned toward the lions as one.
"Nobody asked your opinion!" they roared in unison.  "This is our antelope!"
As the lions strolled off to find new game, the hyenas and jackals were still bickering.  I suspect they are at it yet.
